Good work on the quit!

You are doing great.

That didn't happen to me...just the dry cough.. but I had some very bad tasting sinus junk (oh this is gross) that expelled itself. Someone here said that the mouth and sinuses make a layer of mucus to protect delicate tissue from cigarette poisons. Didn't last two weeks though. The tea and steam should be helpful too.

caligirl - I didn't have that too much but when I lost a quit some time back, I noticed that smoking again screwed up my sinuses. Realized that they were always screwed up when I was smoking, I just hadn't notice before.

I never experienced that, all my coughig was done before I quit, but I understand it is a pretty common symptom in lots of others....

Hope you breeze through it quickly, and I hope it's not a very untimely cold.

Hello Caligirl916,

As you quit smoking you can experience an uncomfortable cough. You can start to cough up black/brown mucous. What is happening is that your body's Cilia (which are tiny hair-like particles that line your lungs) are in a healing process.

They are first paralyzed and your body does not want to produce any mucus, therefore a dry cough sets in. As the cilia begin to heal themselves they start to clean all areas of your lungs. This is where you start to cough up all that awful mucus.

These symptoms can last day or weeks after you quit smoking. The healing is a long process of change, even though some of the benefits come more quickly than others. Try drinking more water, herbal tea and even cough drops or candy. Sitting in the bathroom with the shower running or using a humidifier at night may also help to dislodge mucus.

If you have a symptom that persists or seems worse than you expected, you should immediately consult a doctor. Its possible that your smoking has been masking symptoms of some illness, and when you stop smoking the symptoms abruptly become noticeable.

Smoking does mask symptoms, so it is important to really know what your body is going through. Regular appointments with your doctor can be beneficial to rule out anything medical.

I am going on my 16th day smoke free, but have had post nasal drip and a cough for the past two weeks. My cough is getting a little worse. I believe this is normal to go through. How long does this last?
